From the ground up
The father/son team of A. Di Bucci and Son creates impeccable homes and has done since 1978. The story of their building prowess in Australia dates back to 1960 when Amico ‘Mick’ Di Bucci first made port at Fremantle.
Travelling solo from his native Abruzzo in Italy, Mick set sail for Australia in search of a better life for him, his wife Angela and his young son Greg. Unable to speak much English and with nobody to turn to, he relied on his considerable ‘all around’ building skills to get by, and it wasn’t long before he found work with a builder in the country.
From here Mick never looked back, eventually building his first home on his own in 1966. This was the platform he needed to start building in his own right as A Di Bucci & Company.
In 1978 A Di Bucci & Son, as it is known today, was realised when Greg joined on a full-time basis. Both now had their builders registration and began building exclusive custom built luxury homes.
A new era is developing with the addition of Greg’s son Alex who has just completed a carpentry apprenticeship and is studying towards his builders registration while supervising for the company.
Since 1978, Mick and Greg have been personally involved with each home they construct, and both agree nothing is expected to change that winning formula any time soon.
“My father and I do the quoting, accounting, ordering, supervision and everything else,” Greg said. “That gives the client some assurance and it means everything is done the way we want it. In the future, I don’t see that changing. If the wheel isn’t broken, I’m not going to change it.”
Most of the work that comes their way is from repeat customers, and Greg puts this down to his father’s legacy of unrivalled quality and service.
“We’re available 24 hours a day, seven days a week,” he said. “Clients can ring us weekends, nights – it doesn’t make any difference to us, our phones are on all the time. They know if they wake up after dreaming of something, they can pick up the phone and give us a call and that’s okay. It’s our business, it’s our life and it’s what we do.”
In terms of success, A. Di Bucci and Son has won multiple HIA Perth Housing and MBA Top Home awards, and the pride in its work extends to submitting every completed build for award consideration.
Even though the awards bring great satisfaction, the company’s main aim is complete customer satisfaction – achieved by going above and beyond what is expected.
“We work to our level of standards, which are greater than the clients,” Greg said. “A lot of builders will do the opposite – if the client doesn’t complain when the build is complete, they’ll move on. It’s cheaper to do that, but it doesn’t give you the same product and final result.
“We like to be able to go back to a house later, have a beer or a coffee with the owner and know that everything was done the way it was supposed to be.”
A. Di Bucci and Son fosters strong relationships at every level of its business. When it comes to subcontractors, A. Di Bucci and Son has been working with the same people for decades – some relationships span generations, as some subcontractors have passed their business onto their children. In the case of customers, the relationships are just as long lasting – almost all of the company’s business comes from people who have built with them before or who have referred their friends, family and business associates.
“It’s all about being up front,” Mick said. “If the client is not doing something right, we tell them and vice versa. At the end of the day, it’s all about getting to the same high-quality result. We’re all striving for the same thing and we can achieve it if we stick together.”
The company mainly operates in the prestige home market, with its prices ranging from $700,000 to $6 million and with an average value of $2 million.
Although this is a far cry from the $25,000 homes the firm worked on when it first started in 1966, Mick said regardless of price bracket, the exceptional quality of the build always remained the same.
